Bob tours an exhibition titled Looking In: Robert Frank's The Americans with SARAH GREENOUGH, the Curator of Photography at the National Gallery of Art. It's been 50 years since Robert Frank published his landmark photo essay in a book called The Americans (originally broadcast January 20, 2009).
Later, Bob talks with ROBERT FRANK, himself. In 1955, Frank received a Guggenheim grant to document American society as he saw it. After a few years traveling the country and shooting almost 30,000 pictures, Frank chose 83 images to include in The Americans. Frank's photographs were embraced by young artists and some critics, but the book was generally loathed by the public as a cruel and unsympathetic look at the country (originally broadcast January 20, 2009).
Bob Edwards Weekend is a two-hour interview showcase, in which celebrated host Bob Edwards highlights the life and work of interesting people, from newsmakers, historians, and authors to artists, actors, and regular folks too.

Dear Bob,
It was a wonderful interview you did yesterday with Robert Frank, really excellent and a great pleasure to hear. He's not known for talking, though many telling and significant thoughts of his about photography appeared in print over the years.
I know Robert Frank slightly, having been introduced to his work by Richard Avedon in '61, - I had just come from Ireland to work as his assistant, and met him later through Marvin Israel who knew how much this meant to me.
Since that time, hardly a day has ever passed that I have not thought about his photographs.
He crossed America like a shadow, always finding the darker side of the street, but with great feeling. Unfortunately his films don't share those qualities.
Anyway, thank you for your good questions, which revealed so much that was hidden before.
